Building a Better Georgia: The Policy Agenda of the Georgia House Democrats

Georgia House Democrats are committed to prioritizing people over politics as we work to create a Better Georgia – where every citizen has the freedom to pursue the American dream. We will protect and invest in Georgians to ensure access to healthcare, world-class education, affordable housing, and quality jobs. Achieving a Better Georgia requires a strong democratic foundation, where the right to vote and the freedom to shape one’s own future are upheld. Together, we can and will advance our state toward justice for all.

Here are the policy priorities of the Georgia House Democrats for the 2024–2025 Biennium. Each of these priorities is achievable when we put people before politics and elect more Democrats.

Healthcare

We will work to expand healthcare coverage for all Georgians by addressing the infant and maternal mortality crisis, expanding mental health services, supporting struggling hospitals, and investing in and protecting our healthcare workforce. This will be achieved through the Georgia Health and Economic Livelihood Partnership (HELP) Act.

Georgia’s elderly population deserves to receive the care they need. We need to address pharmacy deserts around the state of Georgia and take a comprehensive look at reducing out-of-pocket prescription drug costs.

Education

We will invest in teachers, ensure full funding for public education and reform the QBE formula so that all children can thrive regardless of zip code. We will invest in early childhood education and development to stop the school to prison pipeline at its root.

We will restore Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship and HOPE Grant to ensure financial barriers do not prevent Georgians from obtaining post-secondary education and expand investments in workforce development opportunities for all. We will also work to increase investment in Georgia’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Housing

Housing is a human right. By protecting tenant’s rights and reforming our eviction laws, expanding the availability of emergency and transitional housing, and increasing more affordable housing along with workforce housing, we will address the full housing continuum and create a pathway to home ownership for all Georgians.

Livelihoods

We will stand and fight for workers and working families by increasing the minimum wage, protecting workers’ rights, subsidizing childcare, and expanding paid parental leave.

The Georgia Work and Family Credit Act will create a state match to the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, and the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit will lift families out of poverty and foster social mobility.

Georgia’s budget surplus, made possible by federal funding, should be used toward  workforce development that meets the needs of the 21st century. We will invest in our state’s infrastructure from transportation to high-speed internet.

We will support our small businesses and foster economic growth in less developed census tracts to ensure our booming economy reaches every corner of Georgia.

Democracy & Freedom

We will defend our constitutional right to vote from attack, expand access to the ballot box, take money out of politics, and ensure that voters choose their elected officials with an independent redistricting commission.

We will work to expand freedoms for all Georgians, from reproductive freedom to ensuring all Georgians can live free from discrimination in housing and employment.

We will support our veterans and honor their service and sacrifice by ensuring they receive the support they deserve through access to healthcare, housing, and education.

Responsible Gun Reform and Social Justice

We will address the epidemic of gun violence and help save lives by working to enact common sense gun safety legislation such as universal background checks, safe storage laws, and waiting periods.

We need criminal justice reform and police accountability to build safer communities and  provide opportunities for rehabilitation to reduce recidivism. And, by the way – no one should go to jail for possession of a cannabis plant.

We will take action to curb Georgia’s greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change. To start, we will invest in clean energy and sustainable, resilient infrastructure that will also grow Georgia’s economy.
